Steps for proper camera connection:

To connect your camera, please follow these steps in this exact order:
1. Close Shutter Stream if it is open
2. Turn the camera ON
3. Connect the camera directly to computer via USB cord, without any USB port hub or cables longer than 6 feet, not media transfer cables just standard printer-like cable
4. Start Shutter Stream
This should now recognize camera and enable cameras live view directly after opening software. If camera is not recognized, please see next steps:
Steps if camera lost connection while software was open:
In some cases, if the software lost communication with camera while open, it may have a hard time reconnecting ('failed to initialize camera' message at software relaunch) OR if it does connect will have frequent crashes. Please follow these steps to resolve the issue:
1. Close Shutter Stream if it is still open
2. If the camera is ON, turn it OFF and disconnect it from USB
3. Unplug battery from camera for 5 seconds
4. Plug battery back in
5. Turn the camera ON
6. Clear All Camera Settings (in the cameras Menu options)
7. Walk through compatible camera set up guide (http://iconasys.com/canon-nikon-dslr-camera-settings/)
8. Connect the camera directly to the computer's USB port, without any USB port hub or cables longer than 6 feet
9. Start Shutter Stream
**In rare cases, user may be required to restart their computer. Please do so if camera cannot be recognized after following above steps**
Latest Software Version
First, please verify you have the latest version of the software. Contact the Iconasys support team to obtain links to the latest versions.
To check the software version, go to the upper right corner of the software's window and click the blue gear, then About. Please update to the latest release version, or if you're comfortable, you can use the latest beta version from the above link.
Proper Camera Connection
Second, take a look at this link for setting up the camera:
Here you can find the settings for the cameras which are compatible with our software. Also be sure to remove the SD card from the camera and connect it directly to the computer with the original USB cable, not through a USB port hub, or not through a cable longer than 6 feet (1,5 meters). You need to stop the camera, unplug it, close Shutter Stream, disconnect all USB devices, turn camera on, connect it then start Shutter Stream.

Other Things to Check
- Please make sure your USB connection cable is perfectly functional, with no defects on it. If the camera works intermittently, please take the USB cable to the camera and leave some slack, as shown in the Figure below.
The idea here is to make sure that once the cable is connected, there is no movement on the USB connection, which can be caused by tension in the USB cable.
- Please turn off the camera, unplug it, remove the battery, wait a couple of minutes, put the battery in, turn the camera on, make sure it is charged more than 50%, connect it, start the software.
- You should try to put the switch on the lens on AF or A (auto focus mode), Reset Camera Settings to factory default - for ex. on the T6i see:
this holds true for all cameras.
- Disable any face detection function from the camera's menu. Also use the compatible camera set up guide:
then connect the camera to USB port, disable any auto-play or application that uses the camera. Then start Shutter Stream.
- Make sure that your camera's manufacturer application recognizes the camera (you can download it for free from the manufacturer's web site Downloads section). If it doesn't, then you need to search on the internet for a solution or to contact the manufacturer. After the camera is recognized by your computer, it will work with our software too. Our software uses the same Software Development Kit as the camera producers.
- Try to connect only your camera on all of the USB ports of the computer with the original cable, without any USB port hub or with not long cables.
- Upgrade your camera's firmware from the manufacturer's website. (For Nikon see this: https://photographylife.com/nikon-firmware-update and then search for your camera at the bottom.)
- Set the camera to save the pictures only in JPEG file format.
- Set the camera mode dial on M mode (completely manual mode).
- Try a different USB cable. Is it firmly fixed on both ends, not loose?
- Disable the antivirus, any auto run and uninstall other applications which automatically start when connecting the camera to the computer's USB port.
- Remove the SD card from the camera.
- Maybe the camera is broken? A good idea is to try to unplug camera from USB and see if it works shooting outside of Shutter Stream, as a normal camera. See if Live View mode works, see if images are being shot and saved to SD card, etc...
Somehow, some cameras, like Canon EOS R on Windows 10, needs to be connected using an USB-C to USB-C cable, in order for it to work.
You can just turn camera OFF and ON again and again. There must be some USB connection issue. So, please tape the USB cable on the camera, to make sure cable is not moving inside the camera either. And having the camera on the tripod is not enough, because cable could still move. Tape on the tripod too, on the working table, desktop too.
- If you got only USB 3.0 ports on your computer, try with USB 2.0 cable and USB 2.0 powered USB hub to get more USB ports from one port (USB port multiplier, with external power cord). USB 3.0 cables and ports have additional wires and they may interfere. It does for our turntables, for example. So, try a USB 2.0 hub, which has a USB 2.0 connection to the camera.
